D&Q’s Friday Funnies: Revisiting Glenn Ganges in The River at Night

    |

A new weekly feature where we wax poetic on our beloved backlist, both here and on Instagram.

A man lies in bed, struggling to sleep and failing miserably. Buzzing from too much coffee and deeply aware that his exhausted wife Wendy will be plenty ticked off with him if his tossing and turning wakes her up, comic everyman Glenn Ganges tries his best to relax as his restless mind, body, and soul wander through space and time.

Has anyone ever captured the strange, discomfiting, and sometimes straight-up trippy experience of insomnia better than cartoonist Kevin Huizenga? Here, the stream of consciousness becomes a raging river of free association: Glenn’s mind relives late-night video gaming sessions, lingers over his regrets for things both said and unsaid, revisits mind-blowing insights into “deep time” from John McPhee’s Basin and Range, and of course tries out various not-so-effective techniques for tricking oneself into finally falling asleep. Panels break apart, spin, and drift off the page altogether as Glenn (and the reader) attempt to make some sense of a world that is simultaneously totally familiar and utterly bizarre.

Glenn Ganges in THE RIVER AT NIGHT is a totally wild journey into the depths of the human mind that will have readers eager to jump back in as soon as they turn the final page.
