D&Q’s Friday Funnies: Revisiting Beautiful Darkness

    |

A new weekly feature where we wax poetic on our beloved backlist, both here and on Instagram.

kerascoët is the collective pen name of Marie Pommepuy and Sébastien Cosset, French artists who have illustrated a wide range of graphic novels and children’s books. Of all their books, BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS may be the most near and dear to the creative couple’s hearts, since the idea for the story, which was written with author Fabien Vehlmann, originated with Marie. This slim volume is beautifully illustrated by Kerascoët, with wildly charming character designs blending into lushly painted natural landscapes.

How exactly do Marie and Sébastien work together? Well, while this creative couple likes to switch things up from project to project, working in different mediums and styles, it’s clear that the process is a fluid one. As Sébastien noted in a recent interview with The Comics Journal, “We don’t separate the work–sketches, inking–like comic book artists sometimes do. It’s more like in animation or some Japanese manga-ka. She works essentially with the characters. I mostly do the backgrounds and things like that. But she also makes the mise-en-scéne, the storyboards, sketches, inking, coloring. It’s always different with each project because we don’t draw with the same style.”
