Hideshi Hino

Hideshi Hino was born Yasushi Hoshino April 19, 1946, in China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. His parents fled back to Japan upon its surrender after World War II. Influenced by Shigeru Sugiura and Yoshiharu Tsuge, Hino officially debuted in 1967 in the magazine COM. He then went on publishing horror comics in legendary alt-manga magazine Garo, establishing his signature style of horror. Originally planning to become a filmmaker, he eventually realized these ambitions with the notorious Guinea Pig film series, writing and directing two of them: Flowers of Flesh and Blood (1985) and Mermaid in a Manhole (1988). Hino has written over two hundred comics and has influenced a whole new generation of horror manga artists, such as Kanako Inuki and Junji Ito.
