Optic Nerve #10 review in the NYU news
The second of three parts of Adrian Tomine’s first extended story continues the tale of Berkeley-ite Ben Tanaka’s romantic woes. His girlfriend having left for her internship in New York, he throws himself into the dating scene, going on several dates with different blonde-haired, blue-eyed girls (not coincidentally the same features of his ex), only to find it doesn’t really work. Tomine’s graceful artwork manages to capture static images of his characters’ lives without coming off as stiff, like a photograph or documentary, and his characters always make you wish you were them, in a slightly masochistic, awkward way that’s comforting.
