"Scrapbook" by Adrian Tomine, Drawn and Quarterly, 212 pages, $24.95.

As the title suggests, this is a collection of mostly ephemeral pieces by the creator of the highly acclaimed "Optic Nerve" series. Early, unfinished strips, illustrations and sketchbook work dominate here, displaying Tomine's strong sense of humor, but not necessarily his ability at creating stories of unique and understated emotional depth. Fans will eat this assortment up, but those unfamiliar with the artist's work would be better served with "Summer Blonde," his excellent collection of short stories culled from "Optic Nerve."
