It’s that time of year where the deadline for Eisner Awards sneaks right up on us. The deadline is this Monday, June 4th at midnight, PDT! VOTE HERE. And not to sound like your mother, buuuuut, everyone likes to complain about what wasn’t nominated, or what didn’t win, but let’s just vote! And if what you wanted nominated wasn’t, then write it in and get all of your friends to as well. It’s called democracy, baby! Stop hating! Start Celebrating!

OK, hats off to our cartoonists who were nominated!
Adrian Tomine’s “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture” in OPTIC NERVE #12. Hey all you people who lament the “death of the pamphlet” put your money where your mouth is, and cast a vote for the cartoonist who is not only still doing pamphlets, but also doing really really high quality pamphlets.
Mizuki-san is rightfully nominated twice for ONWARD TOWARDS OUR NOBLE DEATHS, first for Best Reality-Based Work and again for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia. Look people, let’s give Mizuki-san the respect he deserves. This is the story of how he fought and survived WW2, the impact of the gyokusai dictate of the Japanese Army and where he contracted malaria and lost his arm. He wrote this book in 1973! 1973!
Our last two nominees share the same category of Best Graphic Album—Reprint, either one you vote for, you can’t go wrong. First, let’s discuss, BIG QUESTIONS by Anders Nilsen. Have you ever seen a comic as beautiful and haunting as BIG QUESTIONS? And while we’re at it, have you ever seen a comic like BIG QUESTIONS? It makes me so happy that a book as singular as BIG QUESTIONS is getting the recognition is deserves.
Our last nominee is the master himself, Daniel Clowes with THE DEATH-RAY for Best Graphic Album—Reprint. The book already swept the Eisners when it appeared as Eightball 23. Why? Because it’s that good. It was that good. It still is that good. Nobody, absolutely, nobody writes and draws a comic like Clowes.
And so that’s it for the official nominees, but the Eisners have a write-in category, where you can right the wrongs of the nominating committee. Perhaps casting a vote for PAYING FOR IT? HARK A VAGRANT? Pretty much any of our titles? Here’s our 2011 roll call again, if you need a refresher!
