The past few weeks have been very exciting for Emma Grove, author of The Third Person! The Third Person is an engrossing and unforgettable memoir about a trans woman seeking gender affirming health care, and the barriers she encounters. Emma Grove explores the intersection of mental and physical care as she is forced to confront a Dissociative Identity Disorder diagnosis amidst the turbulent therapy sessions depicted in the book.

On May 29th, Emma appeared on Q with Tom Power, where she discusses the therapeutic process of unpacking such a transformative experience through the graphic form. The cartoonist also touches upon how the book has helped her to connect with others going through similar struggles:
“[W]riting the book helped me to figure out what happened. Because during that six-month period, I had mentally blocked out pretty much all of it[…] Writing this book helped me to process what happened and to deal with it, to move on and put it behind me.”
“I did get to talk with a few people that had [Dissociative Identity Disorder], that had been going through similar things mentally, and it meant a lot to me that the book meant a lot to them. [Because] they were who I was writing it for.”
The Third Person has also just been named this year’s recipient of the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Nonfiction! Congratulations Emma!
